How we pay benefit

Did you know you can apply online to:

  • Change your bank details
  • Backdate a claim
  • Direct payment to landlords

The best way to do this is to create an account with us. Once you have done this, you will be able to make the application through your account, and track its progress from start to finish.

What you'll get

How much benefit you'll get depends on:

  • the amount of rent you pay
  • how many people live with you
  • how much money you have coming in
  • if you have any savings

Housing Benefit may be reduced if:

  • there are any *non-dependants* in your home
  • you're a council or housing association tenant and have one or more spare bedrooms 
  • you're single and under 35 years (in most cases)

If you rent from a private landlord, how much you get depends on the Local Housing Allowance (LHA). 

Paying your benefit

Private tenants

If you're a tenant of a private landlord, we'll pay your benefit direct to your bank account every two weeks in arrears. You need to make sure that you have a bank account set up for us to do this. 

If you change the account that we usually pay benefit in to, you'll need to let us know about this.

It may be possible to pay this directly to your landlord if:

  • you're more than eight weeks in arrears
  • you're unable to deal with your own finances

Each case is looked at individually. If you want us to make payments to your landlord for one of these reasons, complete the form below. We usually make payments to landlords every four weeks in arrears.

Backdating claims

We can sometimes 'backdate' your benefit to a date before we received your claim. You need to give us a good reason why the claim was not made earlier for us to consider this. We won't backdate claims simply because you were not aware of your benefit rights.

Some examples of when we might backdate include:

  • the death of a close relative
  • you have problems communicating or understanding
  • you or a member of your household have been in hospital, seriously ill, under stress or pressure which led to a delay in making a claim
