Health and safety at work

Health and safety in the workplace

The enforcement of standards is split between us (your Local Authority) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Where there are significant failings, or where people are put at serious risk of injury or ill health, action will take be taken.

We carry out health and safety inspections of businesses in the area. Our aim is to ensure that health and safety at work is effectively managed and to help businesses to meet their legal responsibilities.

Our responsibilities

We cover most service and retail premises within the Staffordshire Moorlands such as:

  • shops
  • warehouses
  • offices
  • hotels
  • sports, leisure and consumer services
  • hairdressers
  • tyre and exhaust fitters
  • residential care homes

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) responsibilities

The HSE have enforcement powers for larger premises such as:

  • factories
  • building sites
  • mines and quarries
  • farms
  • educational establishments
  • fairgrounds
  • chemical plants
  • offshore and nuclear installations

Visit the HSE website for more information, including how to raise health and safety concern.

Employers' responsibilities

If you employ people, you also have a responsibility to maintain acceptable standards in the workplace. For more information on accidents, health and safety law and workplace conditions, take a look at the GOV.UK website.
