Here you can find the latest information about the regeneration project to improve Cheadle's Market Hall and outdoor marketplace.
The Council bought this long-established indoor market and outdoor market space in September 2024 at an auction, after its owners put the site up for sale.
Located in the heart of the town centre, the Council sees the site as a catalyst to regenerate Cheadle town centre.

What has happened since its purchase?
On buying the Market, its main buildings were in poor condition, it lacked heating and ventilation, decent toilets and modern facilities. The Council has installed bollards to secure the market square, introduced a stall booking system, and ensured the premises are compliant for health and safety and protection against fire.
It then appointed consultants with experience of developing markets - Esther Worboys and Stride Treglown architecture and design practice, to look at options for developing the site.
Consultations took place with traders, local businesses, residents and other stakeholders including Cheadle Town Council.
Collectively, there was overwhelming support to retain, in some form, a market; a call for more food and beverage, artisan and craft produce, opportunities in the outside market area for potential community and event activities, an improved appearance, and extended operating hours into the evenings to support the night-time economy.
What will the site become?
Quite simply a new market, focussed on food and beverage and in line with local wishes. The site will be developed, as the visualisations show, to incorporate a number of stalls in the indoor market hall providing a combination of food and beverage and retail, indoor seating, further stalls in an arcade area reflecting the market's original design, and a separate pop-up outdoor market.

Will it be sympathetic to the area?
Yes, it will. The new market will continue to be framed by a Georgian terraced building and will be designed to complement the heritage of Cheadle and respect the town centre's conservation area.
When is it due to be completed?
We expect a planning application will be made in July 2026. If approved, we would hope that building work can begin in 2027 and completed in 2028, with the new Cheadle Market opening for business in 2028.
