Nicholson exhibition showcases youngest artists yet

Published on 21 October 2022

Visit the Nicholson Museum and Art Gallery in Leek this half-term to see the youngest ever artists to display work through their own eyes.

The Marvellous Me exhibition features self-portraits created by the nursery class at St Mary's Catholic Academy whilst the reception class imagined themselves in future jobs they may like to do.

Their artworks are now on show at the gallery in Leek until Saturday 29 October and the children visited this Nicholson this week for a sneak preview.

Councillor Keith Flunder, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: "We're delighted to host this exhibition by our youngest ever artists at the Nicholson Museum and Art Gallery.

"The creativity, imagination and ambition for their futures displayed in these artworks really showcases the talents of these children and, I hope, inspired in them an interest in arts and culture which they will be able to continue to enjoy in the Moorlands as they grow up.

"It was great to welcome the children, their parents and teachers to the Nicholson to preview the exhibition before it opened to the public and I recommend anyone looking for fun, free activities this coming half-term makes the time to see it for themselves - it really is worth it!"

Thirty six children, aged between three and five years, were encouraged to try working in a variety of different artistic media, using both observation and imagination, and to develop their own style. The project aimed to increase their confidence and sense of self-respect.

The Nicholson Museum and Art Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and admission is free.
