Pupils at primary schools across the Moorlands have taken part in recycling workshops in a classroom with a difference - a converted waste collection vehicle!
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and its waste partner AES worked with bin wagon manufacturer Dennis Eagle to offer the opportunity to eight local schools.
The former bin wagon has been converted into a mobile classroom so pupils get the chance to see inside it whilst learning about waste and recycling.
Staff from AES used the workshops to raise awareness of key environmental issues, including the benefits of recycling, and help encourage correct recycling through a variety of activities.
Councillor Sav Scalise, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "Recycling is a great way we can all help to make a difference to the amount of waste and rubbish we create - and ultimately to our environment.
"We do have a good recycling track record here in the Moorlands, and a kerbside collection service to make it easier for everyone to get involved, and I'd like to say a big thanks to all those households that are already taking part.
"But there is always room for improvement and it's never too early to start forming good habits which will last a lifetime. That's why we were delighted to be able to offer these interactive, engaging workshops for primary schools across our District.
"The converted vehicle is a fun and memorable space to highlight the benefits of recycling and the feedback we've had is that the children really enjoyed these sessions and learning more about the benefits of recycling and re-using some of the items we no longer want which they can put into practice immediately and throughout their lives."
Due to the availability of the vehicle, the schools were selected at random based on applications received from interested schools but AES will continue to offer a series of workshops throughout the year to all schools.
Melissa Loughran, Head of Science and Computing, from St Edward's CE Academy in Leek said: "I just want to say a massive thank you for the bin truck visit. Our pupils absolutely loved it and had a great time. Our teachers were bowled over by it too - the truck looks fantastic!".
