Rural relief

In the Spring Budget 2017, it was announced that a scheme of relief will be made available to support those ratepayers, who have lost mandatory rural rate relief with effect from 1st April 2017, due to an increase in rateable value.

Rural rate relief

You could get rural rate relief if your business is in a rural area with a population below 3,000.

From 1 April 2017, if you meet the criteria for the 50% rural rate relief, shown below, you will automatically get a further 50% discretionary relief. The qualifying categories are:

  • the only village shop, post office or general store, with a rateable value of up to £8,500
  • the only public house or petrol station, with a rateable value of up to £12,500

When we can award a further discount

If we feel that the business is of benefit to the community and in the interests of its council tax payers we may also give relief of up to 100% to other rural retail businesses for properties with a rateable value under £16,500.

How to apply

Complete the form below. We'll write to you to let you know the outcome, and will send you a new bill.
