Exporting Food & Drink Products to the US & Canada - what's hot and what's not!

The US is the UK's second largest market for Food and Drink exports, which totalled £2.2 billion in 2018 (UK Food & Drink Federation, 2018). The US is an attractive market due to its large, affluent and diverse population - the biggest consumer market in the world. There is a relatively stable economy and established infrastructure. There are relatively low regulatory barriers and manageable tariffs. Consumers have a growing interest in high quality food and drink from abroad, whilst continually seeking convenience driven foods.

English sparkling wines, cheese, and gin are emerging categories in the US with high growth potential. The US also offers great opportunities for high-value, differentiated, niche, and on-trend products including confectionery, cheese, coffee, snacks, spices, ethnic, natural, organic and more. Private-label sales grew 125% between 2016 and 2017, providing opportunities for UK brands with expertise working in private label.

The UK and Canada share a language and a number of cultural traits, one of which is similar tastes in food and drink. There's a demand for UK goods and our brands are well-recognised. Canada has an affluent and sophisticated consumer base with a strong appetite for free-from, organic, speciality and health foods and  premium products such as niche meats and fine cheeses. There is also demand for religious, snack and convenience foods.
