Local Plan - Frequently Asked Questions

Local Plan 1

Why do we need a new Local Plan?

The government requires all local councils to develop a long-term plan which sets out how and where land can be developed. We have an existing plan for the Staffordshire Moorlands but it needs updating.

Why does the existing plan need updating?

Our existing plan for the Staffordshire Moorlands does not include any allocations for housing and other types of land uses. The new Staffordshire Moorlands Local Plan will include sites for development and boundaries. It will be a single document that will take a fresh look at the development needs of the district for the next 14 years to 2031.

What type of things will the Local Plan cover?

It will set out the vision for the District, and allocate sites for housing, employment and other forms of development alongside policies which seek to protect and preserve open space, green infrastructure, historic heritage and environmental assets.

What progress has been made on the Local Plan so far?

We have already undertaken two public consultations on the draft plan - on site options in 2015 and preferred option sites and boundaries in 2016. The comments received in response have been used to prepare this latest version which is called the Preferred Options Local Plan.

What is the next stage?

We are now asking people for their views on the Preferred Options Local Plan. The comments we receive will be taken into account as we prepare the 'Publication version' of the Local Plan. The timetable is:

Preferred Option Local Plan July - Sept 2017 (current consultation)

Publication version of Local Plan - Anticipated February/March 2018

Submission to Government - Anticipated June 2018

I have already made comments on previous versions of the plan. Why do I need to make them again?

All comments received so far have been considered by the Council alongside national policy and guidance. Changes have been made at each stage so it is important that any comments we receive relate to the latest version of the Local Plan.

How can I get involved?

The easiest way is to go online - www.sta You can find out more about what is happening in your area and make your comments via our consultation portal. Once you have registered online you will be notified of future consultation stages.

Comments can also be made by email: or in writing: Freepost RRLJ-XCTC-JBZK, Regeneration Manager, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Moorlands House, Stockwell Street, Leek ST13 6HQ (no stamp needed).
