Dog breeding

Pet owners and livestock keepers can visit GOV.UK or the RSPCA websites for specific advice on maintaining the welfare of their animals during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The CFSG website provides advice for Animal Businesses providing care for key workers' animals & on the Covid 19 restrictions, but please be aware that this is for guidance ONLY, all other restrictions are still in operation.

If you wish to open a dog breeding establishment you need to have a licence. A breeding establishment is any premises where the business of breeding dogs for sale is carried on, including over the internet and from home.

What we must consider

We must be sure that the following conditions are met before we issue a licence:

  • that animals will be kept in suitable accommodation
  • adequate food and drink will be provided
  • any mammalian animals will not be sold too young
  • that steps are taken to prevent disease spreading among the animals
  • that adequate fire and emergency provisions are in place
