The gift of free parking this Christmas

Grey November days are all set to be brightened up across the Moorlands by the lights and colour of Christmas decorations in our towns and high streets as the district prepares to celebrate the festive season.

And Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is once again offering residents, visitors and local businesses an early gift in the shape of free parking for the seasonal light switch-on events in Biddulph, Cheadle and Leek and on its car parks on December Saturdays in the run-up to the big day.

Councillor Sybil Ralphs, Leader of the Council and portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "Anticipation always begins to build at this time of year and the switching on of the festive lights is a real marker that Christmas is just around the corner.

"It heralds the start of a busy and exciting time as people across the district shop for those special gifts and seasonal treats - and our shops and markets offer a wide variety of goods to suit all tastes and pockets. Shopping locally also gives our economy a boost so I'm delighted that the Council is once again doing our bit to encourage people to support their town centres by offering free parking."

Parking in Council car parks will be free in Leek and Biddulph on Saturdays 3, 10, 17 and 24 December and in Cheadle on 10, 17 and 24 December. Drivers are reminded that whilst parking is free, all other regulations still apply including maximum stays and parking correctly.

Additionally, people can park without charge for the switch-events events as follows:

  • Leek - Friday 18 November;
  • Cheadle - Saturday 26 November; and
  • Biddulph - Saturday 26 November.
