The Nicholson Institute is undergoing a landmark transformation
The Nicholson Institute is undergoing a landmark transformation to:
- Return the lower ground floor to an arts studio
- Re-imagine the museum space to create an exciting experience for visitors
- Re-design the library to create a modern, inviting experience
- Provide new high-speed public WiFi throughout the building

The library is being modernised to reflect the evolving needs of communities, readers, researchers, learners and families whilst respecting its heritage setting.
Funded by the UK Government, and led by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, this redevelopment project will breathe new life into one of the town's most treasured buildings.
The building will re-open in autumn 2026 and a temporary library is available at Moorlands House in the meantime.
Work to restore the murals on the north and south walls, by respected Leek artist Robert Timmins is now complete. The work to clean and repair the paintings, which depict women reading, playing music, painting, and spinning and weaving, took around six weeks. It was carried out by specialist conservation and restoration company Lincoln Conservation.
We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026 once the work is complete.
