This was a three-year project that began in October 2002 with funding from English Nature's Wildspace! grant scheme funded through the New Opportunities Fund. The grant provided up to 75% funding for capital works on Local Nature Reserves(LNR) in the Staffordshire Moorlands plus a contribution towards the cost of volunteers working on the LNR sites. The LNRs which benefited from this project were:
Hales Hall Pool LNR
Brough Park Fields LNR
Ladderedge Country Park LNR
Biddulph Valley Way SBI
The Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Local Nature Reserves Initiative aimed to enhance the site interpretation and access at Local Nature Reserves in the District.
Ecological surveys provided greater ecological understanding of Local Nature Reserves to underpin revised management plans.
Habitat Management as part of the project improved the value of Local Nature Reserves for wildlife and helped contribute to targets in the Staffordshire Biodiversity Action Plan and the Parks and Countryside Strategy and Service Plan.
Educational materials were produced about the Local Nature Reserves. These are available for schools and other groups and have increased the value of the Local Nature Reserves as a local educational resource.
Local people were encouraged to become more involved in the Local Nature Reserves through volunteer conservation work-days. Site based newsletters also increased local awareness of each site.
