Rural Regeneration in North East Staffordshire

About Rural Regeneration

The Rural Regeneration in North East Staffordshire programme (SRB5) which ended in March 2006, was a Government fund to tackle social, economic and environmental problems in 34 parishes comprising the Peak Park parishes of Staffordshire Moorlands, much of the Churnet Valley - also in Staffordshire Moorlands, and the Weaver wards of East Staffordshire.

It helped local people develop their own ideas to improve their communities and support projects identified by people living and working in the area.

The key issues the programme tried to tackle included:

  • Supporting the restructuring of the rural economy by developing business potential in farming and other rural enterprises.
  • Raise skill levels and open up opportunities for life-long learning.
  • Enhancing the capacity of the communities, including young people, to contribute to the sustainable regeneration of their villages.
  • Improving transport and access to employment opportunities, social, community, education, health and welfare services.
  • Improving community safety and reduce the fear of crime.

Rural LSP
Although the Programme ended in March 2006, the Partnership established to manage the SRB5 continues as part of the Local Strategic Partnership, and will be called the Rural Partnership. A key task for this group will be to develop an Action Plan for the rural area (map) that will highlight and recommend actions to address the key challenges facing rural North East Staffordshire over the next five years.
